Gnatology

Gnatology examines the relationship and function of the jaw joint, the jaw muscle and the teeth. Since the disorders manifesting in the jaw area often reach beyond an issue with a jaw joint, these disorders are now mostly referred to as craniomandibular dysfunctions (CMD), which refers the involvement of the entire head and neck region.

Why is gnatology important?

For the treatment of jaw joint dysfunction and pain, conservative treatment is primarily recommended according to the currently valid professional protocol, which is based on jaw physiotherapy.

To restore the resting state of the jaw joint, special jaw joint physiotherapy exercises are required, which includes quitting bad oral habits and loosening the jaw muscles.

This special therapy is used to treat complaints limited to the jaw joint area, also affecting the treatment of headaches, neck and facial pain.

The muscles of the jaw play a major role in the development of jaw joint complaints. With various therapies, the mobility of soft tissues can be optimised, local or radiating pain of the jaw joint can be relieved.
